Singing History for DEMOCRACY
Ponad stu europejskich uczniów szkół średnich, w tym 20 uczniów LO 11, pracowało w tym roku na lekcjach języka angielskiego, we współpracy z rówieśnikami z Francji, Hiszpanii i Włoch w ramach projektu eTwinning. Razem studiowali historię i walkę o demokrację przez pryzmat kilku znanych musicali. Celem projektu jest podniesienie świadomości nastolatków na temat ważnej roli, jaką uczestnictwo ludzi odgrywa w zachowaniu demokracji. Został opracowany jako twórczy sposób studiowania historii poprzez musicale. W oparciu o współczesną historię oraz musicale jako artystyczny sposób wyrażania ludzkiego głosu, uczniowie odkrywali różne konteksty historyczne walki o demokrację, wolność i prawa człowieka. Po zapoznaniu się z historycznym tłem teksty piosenek stały się inspiracją dla twórczości uczniów i ich wspólnego wkładu w utrzymanie demokracji przy życiu. Międzynarodowe zespoły współpracowały, wymieniały informacje, tworząc cyfrowe i interaktywne ilustracje. Zwieńczeniem projektu była publikacji ebooka.
About the project
Singing history for democracy is a project focused on democratic values and aimed at raising awareness of the important role that people’s participation plays on their preservation. Taking contemporary history as a content framework and musicals as an artistic way of expression of people’s voice, students are meant to work on musical songs showing how people have had to struggle for democracy, freedom and human rights throughout history in different ways and under diverse circumstances. Getting to understand the historical background, the lyrics of the songs will turn meaningful and inspiring for the students’ own creations and their collaborative contribution to keep democracy alive.
Being developed in English as a foreign language for all the participants, one of the major goals of the project is to enhance students’ communicative competence by using the language for real communication as well as a means to facilitate learning. However, the main objective of the project is to help teenagers to become educated democratic citizens by learning from history and getting ready to exercise their responsibilities in the future. They will learn to value diverse forms of art (song, poetry, dance, film and theatre) both as source of knowledge and as a way of expression while making use of ICT tools effectively and responsibly.
After getting familiar with the musical theatre as a genre that has been used to represent historical events and social issues in contemporary history, students will work in international teams to develop thematic projects making connections between specific songs from selected musicals and the historical significance of the time they depict. Each project will be developed basically in four stages: research on the historical background, analysis of the lyrics, discussion and creation of original products in diverse artistic ways (writing, drawing, singing and performing). Each student will contribute to the common task their according to their personal skills and abilities. All the projects put together will make an original history book illustrated by the students.
Besides the public twinspace including findings, opinions and the students’ pieces of art, the final product of the project will be an online publication which could be used as an alternative contemporary history book for schools. From a didactic point of view, the project is conceived to be a model of CLIL teaching approach and teamwork.
